Happy Working Naked Day!

QuickImage Category Fun Announcements Career

February 1st is National Working Naked Day. It is a day for millions of Home Office Professionals (HOPs) to try to improve the way they work from home by stripping away their anxieties about working from home. This doesn't apply only to those who are self employed; anybody who spends a majority of their work time in a Home Office is a HOP.

In addition to a lack of (or severely lessened) support from a corporate office; I've discovered (from personal experience) that one of the biggest issues HOPs face is a complete cutoff of "water cooler" communications. While this might seem a blessing to you corporate-types ("quit the chit-chat and get back to work"); this type of communication is an often unnoticed yet extremely critical medium of information exchange. On the surface this gossip, chit-chat, half-joking type of conversation may appear to have a low signal vs. noise ratio; but that assumption could not be further from the truth. The signal is just not obvious. It is there, hidden amid myriad layers of blathering prattle, and it is quite strong. The nuggets of information carried in these quiet hallway conversations are diamonds of truth about what is going on (both good and bad) with regard to every project, client, venture, asset, goal and employee of the company.

Don't Go Dark

For the HOP; getting to these diamonds, even in today's modern age of communication, even equipped with the best collaborative tools in the world, takes hard work, dedication, and patience. You need to ping / call / email your boss and your co-workers on a regular basis with "pointless" requests. They, being in the corporate environment, are not even aware of how cut off you may be feeling. These interruptions allow you to both gather and give this non-official, yet critical information. I'm not saying make stuff up, nor am I saying to bother them for no reason. What I am saying is that while your pings / calls / emails may not appear to have any project pertinent reason they are still valid. Don't be an ass and overdo it. Your boss trusts that you are capable of working "unsupervised", so don't abuse that trust with a continual barrage of yakety-yak. Occasionally calling up a boss or co-workers just to say "hi -what's up?" may seem like an unwarranted interruption; but it helps maintain your relationship -it reminds both your peer, and you, that you are still part of the team. Just remember what "occasionally" means.

One Million Words

<proudpappa>

I attended a Reading Awards ceremony this morning at my daughter's school. The top readers from the 5th and 6th grade were recognized for their reading proficiency.

My daughter Ryley is one of the children who read over a million words during the first semester. That works out to about 1 Harry Potter size book a week; outside of regular school work and reading assignments. Good Job Ryley!

Please welcome Chuck Dean

QuickImage Category Lotusphere2008 Blogs Announcements BleedYellow

Today, while waiting for the Closing Session to begin, I was speaking with my friend Chuck Dean about an idea he had for a blog. He was thinking about starting up a blog geared specifically towards the Lotus Notes and Domino needs of the SMB (small to medium businesses with less than 500 employees) market. I told him I thought it was a spectacular idea.

Chuck has quite a bit of experience in this arena, both with respect to IT and Business needs. I've known him for several years, and he really knows what he is talking about.

I just got a text message from him a few minutes ago, and his site is now live. He doesn't have anything posted yet, but I figure he will rectify that very soon.

Watch his site, I predict he will have a lot of very important and very interesting things to say. Welcome to the blogging world Chuck.

Bleeding Yellow

Category Lotusphere2008 Announcements Career BleedYellow

The last several months have been an exercise in frustration. Being out of work is not something I would wish on anybody. Being out of work, in Michigan, is even more frustrating. Things that would be absoutely unnaceptable any place else are considered normal here. It is not at all unusual for people to commute 100 or more miles, one way, in order to find work.

I've been told by many "in the know" people (recruiters, mostly) that my experience is too specialized, and perhaps I should consider learning some other technologies such as Visual Basic, C++, Java, CSS, DHTML, Windows API, JavaScript, XML, or SOA. And I've exhausted myself explaining to these same people that being an expert in Lotus Notes/Domino Development/Administration requires that I master all of these things and more. I've been told by many of these same people that career wise, it is simply not possible to find work in the field that I love, and that I really should try something other than Lotus Notes/Domino.

This isn't to say that I'm not willing to try out other platforms. Quite the contrary. At my core, I'm a problem solver and creator of things. I love challenges, and I love making useful things. Development for Lotus Notes / Domino has been my primary source of income since R3. I have stuck with this platform simply because it is the best one I've yet found. I've used many other languages, platforms, IDEs, and technologies throughout my career, but I've always come back to Lotus Notes. The simple truth is this: I bleed yellow.

Please forgive my impertinence, but telling me to give up Lotus technologies is akin to telling a heart surgeon to take up plumbing. They are both valueable professions, they both pay well, and they both have something to do with connecting tubes and making sure valves don't leak, right?

Which brings me to the main point of this post. I know I said in an earlier post that I wasn't going to announce this until Lotusphere, but the number of emails I've received has been astonishing, in addition to the number of page views. So I'm going to go ahead and announce it here and now.
